This is a beginner friendly chat about shadow work! So if you are brand new to the term “Shadow Work” don’t worry, this article will help you get a complete understanding for it and how to begin your journey on getting intune with your shadow self!
Lets begin!

What is shadow work?
Shadow Work is basically going deep within and finding that part of you that you shove far away from the light that is you. This is where trauma, self sabotage, insecurities and much more live. The goal of Shadow Work is to reach deep inside and pull out your shadow self and pour out what is being held captive in the shadows. You will most likely have a lot of emotion when doing so and you may cry, feel anger, want to scream and yell! This is all COMPLETELY normal and how this should take effect on you. The most common way to do this is to journal. I know a lot of people don’t necessarily like to write, so I have some other tips/ideas for the people who can’t stand to write.
- Create your own music
- Create art (of any kind)
- Make a short film
- Create a video diary
- Make a playlist of music
Now I also want this to be known that you DO NOT need to share this with anyone but yourself. You will be in the most vulnerable state of mind and you must do what feels safe for you. So do this all for you and your healing journey. And if you never feel ready to share your shadow self that is totally fine! Remember this is all for you and finding yourself and making YOU happy and healed.

How to begin?
I find doing a little bit of self care first is important to helping yourself open up a bit. You are bringing your shadow to the light and that can be really rough. So go easy on yourself!! Grab your comfort snack, drink, clothes, etc and maybe light a candle and put on some music or a show that brings you a sense of relaxation. Take a moment to just breathe, this is a form of grounding, cause you want to remember while doing this that you are safe and whatever the topic is, that isn’t who you are as a person, it was just a learning curve to make you a stronger person.

To begin, find a prompt or if you have something that is really taking a toll on your mental, write about that! Try to dig deep, but also stay within your own boundaries. This shouldn’t make you feel icky and uncomfortable. You can start nice and light and work your way up to the core of your shadow self. Pinterest has lots of good prompts for a variety of different things to write (or however you want to express it) about. I’ll add some attachments of some good prompts as well.

I hope this helps guide you on this beautiful healing journey
