Connection With Your Ancestors

Connection With Your Ancestors

Connecting with your ancestors are a key component to beginning your witchy or spiritual journey. Learning how to communicate with them and pay your respects is so important. I have a video posted to my YouTube channel on this topic.

In addition, Chaotic witch aunt has a variety of videos touching on this subject and I recommend watching those videos as well!

Ella Harrison has a witchy book with some really cool and useful ancestor spells on how to communicate and all that fun stuff!

So let’s get into it!

Step One:

Find out your background, see who you are connected to and who you are and where you came from.

  • Ask your family
  • Take a DNA test
  • If you are adopted and don’t know your blood family, you could take a DNA test or if you feel comfortable with working with your adoptive ancestors by all means, go for it!!

Step Two:

Research!!

  • Learn about traditions, cultures, religions, sacred places, etc.
  • Learn about types of divination they used if that is something you are into!
  • Learn about special meals and drinks
  • Use forms of divination to ask them what they want and leave offerings.
  • Create a sacred space for them, like an alter, use this space to meditate or just hangout.
  • Learn about special symbols, colours, clothing, shoes, etc.
  • Learn history of where you are from too!

Step Three:

Set boundaries, this is very important! Due to the fact you have ancestors who may have been mean, sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. We MUST set boundaries. As Frankie (Chaotic Witch Aunt) said in their video, if you are white on Turtle Island, you will definitely have some racist ancestors.

  • Only allow in the ancestors who accept you and respect you
  • Only allow what you feel comfortable with
  • You are the living one here, you have control with what you want for you and your home
  • Same as above this is your home, they are residing in your home, they must respect this

Conclusion:

We work with ancestors to pay respects to their hard work and we thank them for creating us. We show our gratitude and appreciation through baking, drinking, and gifting  things they like or something super important in that culture, religion or tradition they took part in. We can have a sacred space for them, like an altar and it doesn’t have to be fancy. So if you only have a candle and a cup of water, they will appreciate that, but if you have photos, jewelry, clothing, or any other special items, keep them on their altar they will love to see them again!
